This page will help you learn to tell the differences between each Budgerigar variety.

Normal:-

Normal's have black wavy bars starting from the top of the head down its back and over the wings. They also have black throat spots. The green series will have black bar markings and a yellow mask, while the blue series will have black bar markings and a white mask.

Spangle:-

Spangle's body patterns, excluding the throat spots, are reversed from a Normal budgie (feathers are edged with a thin black line). The variety does have the same ground and mask series colour as the Normal variety.

Opaline:-

Opaline's have faint black bars on their head, their not bold like Normal budgies and the body colour also bleeds over the back of the head. They have a V shaped area just above their wings that will be their body colour and have little or no black bar markings at all.

Cinnamon & Brownwing:-

Cinnamon's have the same bar markings on their head, back and wings as a Normal budgie only the bars are brown, including the throat spots. Brownwing's once thought to be a extinct variety are now on their way back. They are simular to a Cinnamon in everyway but one, they have plum coloured eyes. When they are born they have pink eyes and after about 4-5days they change to the plum colour. They also have pink feet and toes and a reduce intensity of their ground body colour. Both varieties have the same ground and mask series colour and bar markings as the Normal variety.

Yellowface & Goldenface:-

Yellowface and Goldenface budgies have the same bar markings and throat spots as a Normal budgie, but they only come in the blue series colours plus Grey and Mauve. Yellowface budgies have the yellow ground colour restricted to certain parts of their body (head, tail and tips of wings) and a dilute yellow mask. Goldenface budgies have a bright buttercup colour mask and the body colour will look greenish because the yellow ground colour is not restricted to certain parts of the body and will spread over the blue ground body colour giving it the green look.

Greywing, Clearwing & Dilute:-

Greywing's have the same bar markings and throat spots as a Normal budgie, only the markings are a dark grey not a black. Their body colour is also diluted to a pastel shade. Clearwing's have very little/light grey bar markings and throat spots but their body colour remains at the same intensity as a Normal budgie. Dilutes are a combination of the Greywing and Clearwing. The Dilutes have very little/light grey bar markings and throat spots and their body colour is reduced to a pastel colour.

Lacewing:-

Lacewing's are a combination of the Ino and the Cinnamon gene. They have red eyes like the Ino's and have the Normal Cinnamon bar markings and throat spots which are a light brown colour.

Below Picture is a Young Lacewing (Green Series.)

Fallow:-

Fallow's are similar to Cinnamon's only they have darker brown bar markings, which can be hard to tell at times and they also have red eyes.

Albino, Lutino, Creamino & Dark Eyed Clear (Ino's):-

Albino's (blue series) are completely white with red eyes and pink feet. Lutino's (green series) also have red eyes and pink feet but are completely buttercup (bright) yellow except their tail feathers and wing tips are white. Creamino's are a combo of both the Albino and Lutino. The body colour is infused with white and yellow giving it a almost spotted look and they also have the red eyes and pink feet.

Dark Eyed Clears are a combination of the dominant pied and recessive pied gene. They look the same as the Albino's, Lutino's and Creamino's only difference is they have dark black eyes with a iris around it.

Recessive Pied:-

Recessive Pied's can have anywhere between 2-6 irregular throat spots and have no iris ring (white ring in their eye.) They have irregular patches of ground colour on their body, with an even solid shade of body colour. Black bars or spots cover the back of the head, neck and cheeks. Wing markings are random in pattern and distribution, they cover about 10% to 20% of the total wing area. The frontal crown should be free of markings.

Dominant Pied:-

Dominant Pied's can have 2-6 black throat spots and have an iris ring (white ring in their eye.) The body colour is to be an even solid shade, except the patches of ground colour that appear on any part(s) of the body and cheeks. The back of the head, neck and wings will have clearly defining black bars. Please Note; that this Pied has no spots and this is consider a fault by Budgerigar Club standards.

Clearflight Pied:-

Clearflight Pied's have between 2-6 evenly spaced round black throat spots and have an iris Ring (white ring in their eye.) They will be an even solid shade of colour throughout their back, rump, breast, flank and underparts. Spots of ground colour may be present on the back of their head. Black bars or spots cover the back of the head, neck, cheeks and wings. The frontal crown and main flight feathers should be free of markings. Please Note; as noted below this is a Opaline Clearflight Pied.

Harlequin Pied (also a Danish Pied variety):-

Harlequin Pied's have between 2-6 irregular shaped throat spots and have no iris Ring (white ring in their eye.) They are a Danish Recessive Pied but are yellow (ground colour) and blue (body colour) only. They have irregular patches of ground colour on their body (covers most of the bottom half), with an even solid shade of body colour. Black bars or spots cover the back of the head, neck and cheeks. Wing markings are random in pattern and distribution, they cover about 10% to 20% of the total wing area. The frontal crown should be free of markings. Please note; This hen is still losing her markings on the frontal crown and she is also a Goldenface, as that is why her mask is a deeper yellow then her body colour. Also note, that the Harlequin Pied is NOT a correct term for this variety, as it is a Danish Pied.

Texas Clearbody:-

Texas Clearbody Budgies look simular to the Normal Budgies, same colours and same markings. Black markings on a Texas Clearbody Budgies are faded or spotted looking, but not always. Body colour (yellow or white) may show faintly over the body, more intensive over the rump and flank.

Picture Below: Sky-Blue Texas Clearbody Hen (Blue Series.)

Crested:-

There are three different forms of Crested Budgies, Tufted, Half Circular and Full Circular. Tufted Crest Budgies should have an upright crest of feathers up to 8mm high just above the cere. Half Circular Crest Budgies should have a half circle of feathers radiating from the centre of the head, falling or raising to a fringe above the cere. Full Circle Crested Budgies should have a flat round crest with the feathers radiating from the centre of the head.

Picture Below: Full Circle Crested Normal Grey Male (Blue Series, Left)

& a Tuft Crested Normal Light Green Hen (Green Series, Right.)

Saddleback:-

Saddleback Budgies look like Normal Budgies in every way, same markings, available in same colours, etc. The only differences with a Saddleback is the body pattern continues from the wings to the middle of it's back, covers the whole Budgies back, making a V shape. When the Budgies wings are spread you see a saddle in the middle of the Budgies back, this will not happen with a Normal budgie.
