Scaly Face:-
Scaly Face is
quite often seen on
Budgies, aswell as other
birds. If left untreated
it will become out of
control and spread to
other parts of the body,
including the beak,
feet, eyes, vent (under
the tail) and wings and
may cause deformity of
the beak and kill your
bird! A mite called 'Cnemidocoptes'
is the cause of this
problem. It lives around
the beak, feeds on skin
debris and builds up to
the coral-like things
you see on your bird.
To treat this mite you
buy some 'Scaly Face
and Leg Treatment'
from your Vet or local
pet shop. There are
other products which
will allow you to treat
your birds once a year
of the mite, so ask your
avian vet next time you
see them. To help
prevent this from
happening in the future,
use a Mite and Lice
spray on your
birds every so often to
help keep it under
control and a clean
aviary will also help.
Above Picture is of a budgie with scaly face, you can see the coral-like things around its beak and eye. You should be able to see the scaly face before it get this far, it will appear on the beak first. I was given this budgie (and many more) as the owner did not know what it was or what to do.
Fights:-
No one likes it when there is a fight between two budgies, especially if blood is drawn. If you find blood, check your birds for injures. If you find any injures and are not sure on how bad they are contact your vet ASAP. Listen and act on the advice giving to you by the vet, this may save the life of your bird(s) and you from a broken heart. If the injure(s) are not deep or bad, put some Dettol or Betadine on the injure(s). This will help clean the injure(s) and stops it from getting infected later on. Keep your injured bird(s) in a smaller cage so treatment of the injure(s) can continue until they have healed.
Stress:-
Stress is a life or death situation for a budgie. Stress is caused after something happens to them, a bad scare or even a fight. The budgie needs time to clam down or it could die from it. Place your budgie in a cage in a warm room, alone! Make sure your budgie has food and water in its cage and place a blanket/towel over the top. Leave the bird alone for around 4hrs to a day, or if you have seen a vet please follow their advice.
Above Picture is a badly injured Lutino hen after a fight with another hen
while she was protecting her young. Her fighting spirit refused to let go, she was put to sleep by a vet.
So yes, she was alive when this photo was taken at 6am and still alive at 8am when she got to the vets.

Infertile Eggs & Cock Birds:-
Tried of getting clear
eggs, also known as 'Infertile
eggs?' Unhappy with how
one cock bird is
performing? Well, Dr
Harry Cooper has a
recipe to help us out.
This recipe is designed
to help increase a cock
birds sperm count. So
why not try it before
you sell that budgie you
love.
Mix 1 teaspoon of
molasses,
1 or 2 drops of
Betadine,
3 or 5 drops of vitamin
B complex,
In one litre of water.
Supply this to the
bird(s) for 6 to 8 weeks
before they are used for
breeding. The vitamin B
complex liquid is hard
to obtain and you might
need to ask your local
chemist to order it in
for you. It is produced
by a company called Bio
Activ and is called
Super B liquid complex.
When using this mix it
is important to change
the water every day and
clean the drinking
containers. If you can
not use the full litre
each day, keep the mix
in the fridge (lasts up
to two weeks.) This mix
contains sugar for
energy, Betadine is
Iodine, Iodine is
important to produce
sperm and vitamin B will
also assist in producing
a high sperm count.
Mouse & Rat Killer:-
Don't like traps and
don't want to catch a
live mouse? And baiting
is a worry cause you
don't wont the birds to
get it. Well give this
recipe ago, you still
need to keep it away
from your birds but at
least you have no nasty
chemicals near them.
Another great thing
about this recipe is if
a cat gets your dead
mouse, they wont get
sick or dead because you
didn't use any poisons.
1/2 cup of Cornflour,
1/2 cup of Cement.
Mix 1/2 a cup of
Cornflour with 1/2 cup
of cement, thoroughly.
Place small amounts in
margarine containers
near the entrance holes
or where you know the
mice & rats are
entering. Shake the
containers each day to
stop the cement from
settling on the bottom.
Rats and mice will go to
find water resulting in
dead pests.
