AVOID, Lettuce, Avocado and Rhubarb.

Please note:- Avoiding Lettuce is my own opinion due to my experiences with it but that doesn't mean you should give your Budgies leaf greens, such as celery.

How to tell the Difference between Male and Female:-

Male:-

Male has blue cere

Sing more

Easier to tame

Larger than a female/hen

Female:-

Female has pink, cream or brown cere

Stubborn

Bite harder than males

Smaller than a male/cock

In some breeds of budgies it is harder to tell if it is male or female, as some lack the pigment in their body to change the colour of their cere. This can happen in Pieds, Lutinos and Albinos.

How to tell the Differences between a Baby and an Adult:-

  • Baby budgies have no Iris in their eyes, as a budgie matures it will gradually get one. Recessive Pied budgies do not get an Iris in their eyes, please use other points.
  • The cere on a baby budgie is a pinkish/purple colour and a adult will have a blue or brown cere. Some Pieds and ino's cere's do not change colour, please use other points.
  • Baby budgies will have black bars from the top of their head to their cere and adult budgie will have a clear frontal crown. Some Pieds are born with no frontal bars, please use other points.
  • Baby budgies have small, irregular throat spots and a adult budgie will have round well defined spots. Some Pieds do not get the throat spots, please use other points.

For more information and pictures of Pied's, please check out the "Varieties of Budgies."

Above Picture is a 6 week old baby budgie. Here you can see the black bars

clearly on the frontal crown and that the baby doesn't have a Iris ring.
